The Avril family has been established in Châteauneuf du Pape since the 17th century. It was in 1896 that the first vintage of the Clos des Papes was released under the impetus of the great grandfather of the current owner of the estate, Paul-Vincent Avril.
After studying at the Lycée Viticole de Beaune, on the strength of these varied experiences, Paul Vincent returned to the estate alongside his father, with whom he shared the same vision of great wines. He continues today the work of his father by developing, far from current fashions, a single cuvée of Châteauneuf du Pape in red and only one in white.
The vineyard now covers more than 30 ha, of which around 10% is white, this one is very fragmented into different plots and located on the best terroirs of the appellation. The grape variety is made up of the great diversity of local grape varieties. Today, the Clos des Papes vineyard is certified organic with very low yields. The harvest is manual, the fermentation is done with indigenous yeasts and the bottling after aging is done without filtration. All this diversity is balanced with great regularity.
