Domaine de Montcalmès

Puechabon

The Domaine de Montcalmès is located 30 km northwest of Montpellier. It takes its name from the hamlet of Montcalmès located on the plateau of the same name which overlooks the Hérault valley. Originally, the family estate had 30 ha of vines entirely vinified in a cooperative cellar. In 1998, Frédéric Pourtalié and his father Jean-Marie decided to create a private cellar. The first red vinification took place in 1999, only 5000 bottles were produced. Today it is around 50,000 bottles per year. The property covers 22 ha in the Terrasses du Larzac appellation.

The Syrahs and Grenaches are planted on a limestone plateau and the Mourvèdre on rolled pebbles. Short pruning, ploughing, manual green harvesting and low yield of 20 to 25 hl/ha. Aging in oak barrels of one, two or three wines for 24 months. Assembly of the three grape varieties two months before bottling with unfiltered wines. In 2012, conversion to organic farming of the entire estate. Since 2015 the Domaine de Montcalmès has been certified organic.
